What does “Goodwill gesture” mean?

Something offered to help settle a complaint or maintain a good relationship; its terms determine what it means for the complaint.

“A gesture is clearer with its terms attached.” — Arthur

What it means in practice

A company may offer money, credit or another benefit after a problem. The label does not explain all the conditions. An account credit, a cash refund and a discount on another purchase are different offers.

An example and a clearer version

The original wording

We offer ÂŁ10 as a goodwill gesture.

In plain English

We are offering £10 in response to your complaint. Please check the offer’s terms.

What to say instead

an offer made to help resolve a complaint.

How to make the next step clear

Read the offer and any settlement wording before accepting. Ask what form the offer takes, whether conditions apply and whether the company considers the complaint closed. The phrase alone cannot answer those questions.

Wording you can adapt

Is this a cash payment or account credit, and does accepting it mean you will close my complaint?

The wording around a phrase matters. Keep the names, dates, amounts and conditions from the original when you rewrite it.
