What does “Self-starter” mean?

Someone expected to begin and organise work without frequent instruction.

“Initiative benefits from instructions too.” — Arthur

What it means in practice

An employer is usually looking for someone who can begin tasks and make progress without frequent prompting. That does not explain the training, authority or support available to the person doing the job.

An example and a clearer version

The original wording

We are looking for a self-starter.

In plain English

We need someone who can plan their work with limited day-to-day supervision.

What to say instead

able to organise and start work independently.

How to make the next step clear

Ask what you would be expected to handle independently and who helps when a decision is outside your authority. Independence works better when priorities and limits are clear.

Wording you can adapt

What would I be expected to handle independently in the first month, and who would support me?

The wording around a phrase matters. Keep the names, dates, amounts and conditions from the original when you rewrite it.
