Arthur’s jargon buster
What does “Revert” mean?
Often intended to mean reply.
“If you require a reply, sir, “reply” will do.” — Arthur
In context
In many business emails “please revert” asks for a response. In ordinary English “revert” means return to an earlier state, which can cause confusion.
A clearer version
“Please reply by Friday.”
Where it gets vague
Use “reply” when you want an answer. Use “revert” only if something should return to how it was.
